Elevate Your Signs: The Benefits of White Ink Printing

Pandora-white-ink-printing

Elevate Your Signs: The Benefits of White Ink Printing.

What is white ink printing?

White ink printing is a specialized technique in which white ink is applied directly to the surface, making it ideal for printing on colored, transparent, or dark materials like black paper, wood, metal, glass, and even certain fabrics. This technique is especially useful for designs that need to stand out against a dark or unconventional background, where standard CMYK (cyan, magenta, yellow, black) inks would typically be ineffective due to their translucent nature. At Spectrum, our EFI Vutek h3 Printer enables us to perform high-quality white ink printing.

Since white ink is opaque, it doesn’t allow the background color to show through, which allows for bright, vivid designs that maintain their color integrity regardless of the substrate color. In contrast, traditional printing assumes a white background and achieves “white” by leaving areas blank, so the underlying white paper or material shows through.

White ink printing is often used in fields such as packaging, signage, and custom merchandise. In digital printing, white ink is also frequently layered under other colors to act as a base, enhancing color vibrancy and contrast on non-white surfaces.

Overall, white ink printing expands creative possibilities, enabling designers and manufacturers to print on a wider range of materials and produce striking, high-contrast visuals that aren’t possible with traditional ink alone.

White ink print finishes

White Ink:

A machine equipped with white ink opens up possibilities for printing on a variety of substrates that standard systems can’t handle. When printing on colored or tinted paper without a white base layer, the substrate’s color will show through, which can obscure the image—on black surfaces, for example, the print would be nearly invisible, and on clear materials, it would appear transparent. White ink solves this issue, allowing for vibrant and opaque prints. We use both UV-curable and latex inks: UV-curable inks offer durability, while latex inks create a thin, seamless layer that adapts to the substrate’s finish for impressive results.

Underprint:

The white ink layer is applied as a base coat across the entire substrate before any color or image is printed. This full underlay ensures that all printed areas, including those with transparent or light colors, maintain true color fidelity without interference from the underlying substrate’s color or texture. Areas without any image or design will appear white, effectively masking the substrate’s original color and creating a consistent background. This approach is ideal for substrates with non-white or uneven colors, as it provides a clean, vibrant finish across the entire printed surface.

Overprint:

After applying the image in reverse, a layer of white ink is printed across the entire substrate. This white backing provides opacity and enhances the visibility of the image when viewed from the opposite side. Commonly used on transparent materials like acrylic or glass, this technique ensures that the image is clear and vibrant when viewed through the substrate. Additionally, any areas without image content appear white, creating a crisp contrast that makes the colors and details of the printed image stand out more effectively. This method is ideal for displays where high-quality, two-sided visibility is required.

Layer Masks:

White ink can be set to either underprint or overprint, depending on the desired visual effect and substrate used. When underprinted, it acts as a base layer to make colors stand out more vividly on dark or transparent materials. In the case of overprinting, it sits on top of the colored inks, adding dimension or highlights to the design. Specific areas can also be masked out, allowing the original substrate to show through selectively, creating a contrast or textured effect. Additionally, images can be masked to ensure that no white ink is printed over or under colored inks in particular areas, enhancing certain design elements or creating unique layering effects. This flexibility with white ink offers versatile options for achieving desired aesthetics on various materials.

Spot White:

In the original file, white is strategically placed as a spot color to achieve precise effects where needed. It can serve various functions: as an underprint to boost opacity beneath other colors, as an overprint to create layered depth, or as a standalone feature without any CMYK involvement. Using spot white ink opens up a world of creative possibilities, enabling complete control over where white is applied. This selective approach allows for intricate design choices, enhancing visual impact and providing versatility for unique finishes and textures.

Transparency Effects:

White ink can be printed at different densities, giving us precise control over its application. For instance, we can apply white at a solid percentage, such as 20%, allowing the underlying substrate to show through, similar to printing 80% black on a white surface. Additionally, we can create gradients by transitioning between percentages, effectively controlling the areas that receive white ink, much like in photographic printing.

White Only:

White ink can be utilized independently, without the need for colored inks. On dark substrates, we can produce a grayscale image using white ink instead of black. Additionally, logos can be printed on dark or textured surfaces.

Print applications:

Window Graphics:

When printing on a transparent substrate for window applications, a significant portion of color vibrancy is often diminished because light passes through the ink. To enhance the visibility and impact of your message, consider using a white underfill, overfill, or a solid spot white print. This approach ensures a stylish, crisp, and clear presentation.

Stickers and Labels:

Design eye-catching custom stickers printed on transparent, colored, or metallic self-adhesive materials, utilizing white ink for a striking effect.

Printed Décor

Meet the rising demand for tailored décor solutions! Transform colored wallpapers and unique substrates—such as wood, aluminum, glass, ceramic, and acrylic—while maintaining their original appearance and texture for stunning results.

Day and Night Backlit Signs:

For striking LED advertising displays, apply a thin layer of white ink sandwiched between two color layers. This design allows the top color layer to be visible during the day, accurately reflecting your chosen hue. At night, when illuminated, the combined density of both color layers enhances true color fidelity. Additionally, this technique offers savvy marketers the chance to feature a different image on the underside layer, effectively providing two advertisements in one!

Benefits:

  • Vibrant colors
  • Prints on different surfaces
  • Light colors on dark substrates
  • Readability
  • Durability
  • High-contrast designs
  • Creative design options
  • Watermark effect
  • Layered dimensions

Benefits of Vehicle Wraps

Why should I wrap my vehicle?

So you are thinking about wrapping your vehicle? Converting your vehicle into a 24/7 advertising tool is a great idea for a number of reasons. Vehicle wraps are one of the most affordable forms of advertising. Think about how many cars are on the road. With a great design that reflects your brand and messaging, you will stand out on the road and even where you park. In fact, based on the volume of cars on the road, the average cost per impression is very low.
Vehicle owners can change or update the color of their car with a protective vinyl wrap. Glossy painted vehicles can become matte finished. A fading red color car can become a newly painted blue car. There are plenty of uses and applications for vinyl wraps including advertising your business, service or product, to hiding an old scratch on your car’s hood.

Reasons Why You Should Wrap Your Vehicle

Advertising:

Advertising your business with vehicle wraps is a powerful marketing tool. Increase the visibility of your business, product or service with vinyl graphics and impress them with your branding!  Here are some compelling statistics on car warps:
  • Car mobile marketing reaches 85% of people at all levels of income.
  • A car wrap can create 20,000 – 70,000 impressions per day.
  • Fleet car wraps increase your business exposure 15 times greater than any other types of advertising.
  • Car mobile marketing exposes your business to commuters on the highways, city streets, sidewalks, and also when the car is parked.
  • More than 70% of people who commute said they have read graphics which are applied to cars.
  • The average driver travels more than 300 miles in their car each week which can create a lot of opportunities for a potential customer to see your car wrap and business.
  • Car wraps and car graphics are currently the fastest growing form of advertising in the US, which is proof that’s it’s a successful strategy!

Cost:

Depending on the size of the vehicle, the cost of re-painting your car or truck is probably going to be more expensive than a new wrap. A partial wrap is also an option if you need to clean up only a section of your vehicle. The larger the vehicle and design, the higher the price will be to produce a wrap. So definitely ask us for a quote before you make a decision. Keep in mind that we use premium vinyl for all our wraps and graphics so they last for years with good care.

Protection:

Vinyl can be seen as a layer of protection for your car. It is not as susceptible to scratches, nicks, or dents that occur over time. When you wrap your car with vinyl, the factory paint is preserved underneath, which also preserves the value of the vehicle.

Versatility:

Vinyl has many uses and applications. From a wide color range to endless design possibilities, you will have your message and branding with you wherever you are driving. Vehicle wraps can also be used for long-term advertising or short-term product or event promotions.

Maintenance:

How you care for your vehicle’s paint differs from how you take care of vinyl wraps. Most of the time, simply rinsing off the dirt with a hose is all that is needed. At times, some soapy water and a rag may be helpful as well. Either way, more driving, and less cleaning. No waxing and avoid auto washes.

Here’s a Great Example of a Personal Car Wrap

Vinyl vehicle wraps protect your car or vehicle and make them look stylish. Sure, you can turn your vehicle into a 24/7/365 advertising machine, knowing that wherever you go you’ll catch the attention of new potential customers, but, you can also take your personal vehicle and wrap it to give it a fresh new look. But vinyl wraps can also protect the original paint underneath.

Vehicle Wraps Can Protect Your Car’s Paint Job

Protecting the original paint helps to preserve the value of your vehicle and the vinyl wrap is not as susceptible to scratches, nicks, or dents, that occur over time. A personal vinyl vehicle wrap is a great way to easily add style to your car especially with the ability to choose from a wide range of design and color options.

Adding Custom Vinyl Details

This Nissan GTR wrap that we did has some small details that were unique to this job. Vinyl vehicle wraps allow us to add custom styling to any vehicle and in this case, it was some Japanese lettering to the left side. Another unique detail to this GTR wrap is the black outline that wraps around specific parts of the car giving it a streamlined look. Remember, if you can dream it, we can print it!

It’s All in the Details

This is a personal vehicle wrap we did for one of our clients. The client wanted their entire Mini Cooper wrapped in leopard print. This job was especially tough as the base paint of the vehicle contrasts so heavily with the colors of the cheetah print. Taking care to make sure the vinyl is applied precisely so the red would not show was crucial to this job turning out as well as it did. It doesn’t matter if you want leopard print, a solid color, or a custom design, we can wrap your vehicle to fit any style or preference.

How to Care for Your Vehicle Wrap

vehicle wrap care

How to Care for Your Vehicle Wrap

Care for your vehicle graphics like you would any fine paint finish. Using high-quality products designed specifically for car care and these cleaning and maintenance procedures will help keep your 3M vehicle wraps looking their best as well as lasting longer.

1. Wash Regularly

  • Wash whenever the car appears dirty. Contaminants allowed to remain on the vehicle wrap may be more difficult to remove during cleaning.
  • Rinse off as much dirt and grit as possible with a spray of water.
  • See item 4, Difficult contaminants, for spot cleaning bird droppings, tar, etc.
  • Use a wet, non-abrasive detergent such as 3M™ Car Wash Soap 39000 or Meguiar’s NXT
  • Generation® Car Wash or Deep Crystal® Car Wash and a soft, clean cloth or sponge.
  • Rinse thoroughly with clean water. To reduce water spotting, immediately use a silicone squeegee to remove water and finish with a clean microfiber cloth.

2. Automated Car Washes

Brush-type car washes are not recommended as they can abrade the film and cause edges to lift or chip, as well as dulling the film’s appearance. Brushless car washes are acceptable.

3. Pressure Washing

Although hand washing is the preferred cleaning method, pressure washing may be used under these conditions.

  • Ensure the water pressure is kept below 2000 psi (14 MPa).
  • Keep water temperature below 80ÆC (180ÆF).
  • Use a spray nozzle with a 40 degree wide angle spray pattern.
  • Keep the nozzle at least 1 foot (300 mm) away from and perpendicular (at 90 degrees) to the graphic.

Important Note! Holding the nozzle of a pressure washer at an angle to the graphic may lift the edges of the film.

4. Difficult Contaminants

Soften difficult contaminants such as bug splatter, bird droppings, tree sap and similar contaminants by soaking them for several minutes with very hot, soapy water. Rinse thoroughly and dry. If further cleaning is needed, test one of these products in an inconspicuous area to ensure no damage to the wrap film: Meguiar’s Gold Class™ Bug and Tar Remover or 3M™ Citrus Base Cleaner. Isopropyl alcohol (IPA) (two parts IPA to 1 part water) or denatured alcohol may also help. Spot clean the contaminants. Do not use rough scrubbing or abrasive tools, which will scratch the film. Wash and rinse off all residue immediately.

5. Fuel Spills

Wipe off immediately to avoid degrading the vinyl and adhesive. Then wash, rinse and dry as in Item 1 as soon as possible.

6. Store indoors or under cover whenever possible

Wrap films (just like paint) are degraded by prolonged exposure to sun and atmospheric pollutants, particularly on the horizontal surfaces such as hood, trunk lid and roof. Whenever possible, store in a garage or at least in a shaded area during the day. At night, protect the car from dew or rain, which may contain acidic pollutants (a common problem in many large metropolitan areas). When a garage is not available, consider using a cloth car cover at night. If your wrap film starts to discolor or turn brown (which is caused by acidic pollution), immediately have a professional remove the wrap film from the vehicle to avoid staining the underlying paint.
