Concrete Earth Architectural Graphics at Clark Avenue School

The Challenge

Our client, Triad Associates, was tasked with creating a new entry plaza for the Clark Avenue School in Chelsea, MA that included architectural graphics of a concrete Earth. Throughout the outside area, there are other planets formed and poured in colored concrete. The walkways between the planets even have special silica carbide hand-seeded into the top surface which allows the concrete to sparkle like stars. Low-voltage lighting was mounted flush to the concrete to look like a large, bright star.

The Project Solution

After taking measurements, we created a shop drawing which included of the Earth which was 42’ in diameter, or 504” long. The shop drawing was printed on our Vutek GS3250x Pro and made up of seven panels; each panel was 78” tall. Because we were working with large pieces of vinyl, we needed to be able to line up the banners in the correct order—top to bottom. We labeled each panel with two rows of letters to be able to distinguish which is the top and which is the bottom.

The Installation Details

Once the concrete was poured, the seven 13 oz. vinyl panels were laid out and bolted down with washers and pins.  The continents were then carved with an electric hand saw. When the land was defined, the water and land were stained and sealed with Brickform products.
